Fires in History: Centralia, PA. Mine Fire.


50 years ago what started as a simple fire to clean up the town dump for Memorial Day turned into a fire the burnt down almost every building in the town supposedly killing 1400 people. What makes this fire unbelievable is that this fire is still burning today.

Depending on the type of fire, for example wood, rubber or waste, various harmful chemicals are released into the air. Fire is a mixture of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, various matter and chemicals depending on what is burning and how hot the fire is.
